This isn't really new. Regular, moderate exercise is good for your health in general. To lose weight, however, you have to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight. That means calorie control.
In fact, eating to excess and exercising to try to keep it off one's gut is considered a mild form of bulimia.
Yeah, studies like those are frustrating. But exercise limbers up your joints, and builds muscle. That makes you stronger, and feel better. And more lean muscle tissue makes your body's metabolism go up, and burn more, even while resting.
(I am often worried that that approach will make me look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. And I'd look damn goofy like that. :-)
When I worked out at the Y for 4 months, I felt better, and my energy leves (and mood) improved. I only lost *one* pound, overall, but lost 3" from around my middle. And that was while exercising with a broken ankle (yes, my trainer adapted my routine to accommodate me -- she was terrific.) But mostly I felt a LOT better, and that was worth it.

muscle weighs more than fat...
muscle on your bod looks better than fat.
if used, muscle begets more muscle.
